You can send them to be developed , the shop will only make prints from any negatives that are good enough to print. You only pay the developing cost and the cost of what prints are good enough. Alternately, you can have the films developed only ,no prints.
Then you can look at the negatives and see if there are any you want to see printed and just get those ones printed. Each negative has a number so you can just say 'Print nos 5 , 8, & 21 for example.
The chances are that it has never been used if the tongue is sticking out. A photographer once told me that it is the latent image on film which deteriorates with time, not the film itself. In other words, if the film has been exposed it is likely that the pictures will not be in very good condition when developed; if it hasn't been exposed you MIGHT get away with using it but, at that age, it's not worth the risk, even if you do have a camera than can take it. I think the best advice is - bin it.
There was a case several years back when someone found an old exposed film and sent it to be processed. Turned out to have previously unseen photos of The Beatles before they became famous. They sold for several thousand £s .
It doesn't follow, douglas. I was taught to leave the tongue out on rewind as it kept the light out better. Difficult - you had to listen carefully as you rewound.
