Is dental floss plastic?

If so, is there an environmentally friendly alternative?

Yes normal dental floss has plastic along with other things in it. Google Plastic free dental floss for hundreds of alternatives.

Thanks AuntPG. I'll try that.

I have one of those electric water flossers, and am unimpressed.
What make is your water jet, Hopkirk? My teeth are very cramped and it is impossible to use dental floss (even the dentist can't do it) and my jet is fantastic.

I think it's a Philips.

It's very good at splattering the mirror.
use a bit of grass from the garden
Mine is a Philips. I bend over the sink and keep my mouth closed whilst using it - no spatters.

Roadman, that's the sort of thing.
We've all got to be kinder to our planet.
I've been thinking of getting a water jet flosser so thanks for the recommendation, Barry.

Do they do eco friendly floss in Boots etc?
Trigger, if you do get one use warm or tepid water.
Will do. I always rinse toothpaste out with warm water due to sensitivity.
^...and if using fluoride and/or "sensitive" toothpaste, the recommendation is NOT to rinse your mouth.

My experience too :-)
No it's not. While it most certainly is made of plastic, the nylon fibers woven into floss are stronger and more resistant to damage than ordinary plastic, so they don't break or fray. To make them even stronger, nylon filaments are coated with wax or another polymer. This coating also ensures that the floss slides smoothly between your teeth as you floss.
