I was just wondering if anyone knew how I could get my student son to work?

I agree, if you threaten to take away your financial input then if nothing changes actually do it, it will be the wake up call he needs.....tough love and all that!!!

If he is a student, does he actually have time for work outside his studies.

seriously you have to make him want to.

charge him rent, make him buy his own food etc

don't give him money and if you know what he would like to do - find him a job yourself if you can

Suddenly plunging him into debt wouldn't do much for his college/Uni studies though! This is a problem I had with my 18yr old tax dodging student son. Luckily I managed to reverse his lazy trend by setting him up on ebay. He slowly worked his way through his old unwanted things, ps games, cd's, toys clothes etc. & thankfully it wasn't too long before he felt the benifit of having his own income. He is now quite well established on ebay selling a product he produces himself on the family computer and making himself about �100 a week.

If it never involved the computer mind I don't know I could of done.... probably stopped giving him money :-)

When I was a student, my Dad worked out what it costed him to keep me during the holidays etc (market rent, cost of bills, cost of food etc) and decided to charg me �230 a month. This was mid 90's and was a LOT of money to a student. You would be amazed at what it made me think and do during my holiday periods when I went home. I went from lazy tax dodger to five day a week plus overtime earner in less that one week. Best thing he could of done - no doubt.

im a student and i work 20 hours per week. ive had a job since i was 15. my parents don't give me any money but they will buy me things that i really need but cant afford. I think if they handed out money all the time i wouldnt bother to work. next time your son really wants something don't buy it for him. if he had a job he would be able to save for it, and would appriciate it much more.

The bad news is that you have a son who is in full time employment then you're legally responsible for him (you must provide food and board etc. etc.) until he's 21.
The good news is that he probably doesn't know this and you can gently prod him to get a job.

I can remember being in that position myself and was loathe to get a job : I'd be VERY defensive if the subject was brought up. I guess your son might be the same.
You'll need to make him see that he can't just a be a sponger as it's harming your finances.

Failing that just throw the sod to the street and ask him how he thinks he'll fare.
