cleaning rust

i have a very, very old antique hand cranked ice cream maker and it still works perfectly. however, the handle is very rusted. how can i clean it without damaging it?

naval jelly works great. you brush it on let it soak and take it off. you may have to wire brush off the really bad spots before using the jelly and sand it a little bit after using the jelly to polish it up a little.
i have hear onion is good. i guess you could puree it and smear it on

Easiest way is to use a paint called Hammerite from B & Q paints directly on rust. It is fairly expensive so get a small tin. The brush can not be cleaned cheaply either so use a cheap one.

I'd have to agree with lightoftruth.


Put it in a bowl of cola for an hour or 2 and then scrub / wipe off the rusty bits. You may have to replace the cola and repeat.


Alternatively leave in a bowl overnight and come back to it in the morning.
