My TV remote isn't working. It's not the batteries, as the red light on the remote flashes when I press a button, but when I try and change the channel, or the volume, nothing happens on the screen.

It's a huge problem, as it is a TV/DVD combi, and I need the remote to use the DVD player. Does anybody have any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Could just be that it's got set to work the DVD or even a non-existent VCR rather than the TV. If it's like mine there's a button that can get pressed accidentally to switch control - it just needs pressing again.
Is it one of those remotes that you buy and programme to your tv etc? I have one of those and if the batteries are going or if I change batteries then I need to reprogramme the remote again. If there is something wrong with your remote and it can't be fixed I can highly recommend those all4 remotes
It's possible that dirt has got inside or something has been split on it. If you're handy with a screwdriver you can get it apart and clean the rubber keypad and the circuit board that this contacts on to.
or might be the receiver on the TV/DVD combi
Have you got a digital camera, webcam or videocamera ? The reason I ask is that these can "see the light" being emitted from a remote control. Look at the remote control through a digital/video camera viewfinder or through a webcam and press some of the buttons. If the little LED at the front of the remote flashed then you know its working OK .
Maybe the batteries are good enough to make the light flash but not good enough to produce a strong signal. This has happened to me. Try replacing the batteries.
