usb to HDMI

hi, i have a laptop which only has usb ports, but no hdmi port. my tv has hdmi port. if i want to connect my laptop to my tv, how could be this done.

is there a usb to hdmi cable?

USB is just a general connector, which can be used for things like a mouse or keyboard or a printer.

But if you connected a USB cable to a TV how would the laptop know to output the graphics via that USB socket ?

I think it can only output graphics via the VGA / DVI socket.

But VGA is analouge and DVI is digital so my guess is you could only output a DVI connector to a digital TV.

(Never connected a laptop to a TV so the above is just guesswork)

Good news and bad news then.

As VHG suggests, VGA is an analog signal, and HDMI is digital.

You could go to Maplins to get a signal converter box, from VGA to HDMI.

But there isn't that much point. VGA can't supply the bandwidth you want to make it look decent on screen, so it'll just look like a mess (especially if you intend to read text on screen).

TV make/model? It almost certainly has a "PC" input with is the same 15 way "D" connector as your VGA output from the laptop. Use the VGA output from the laptop to the VGA input on the TV using a normal VGA cable. Be sure to set the output resolution to the same native resolution of your TV (i.e. if it is 1366 x 768 then set the laptop output to that).

Ignore the "bandwidth" rubbish someone spouted further up. VGA is more than capable of giving you a HD images and better. Staying in the analog domain does not mean worse pictures, as you get the benefit of full 10 bit per colour signals.

Yes you're right, sorry. My point is that the signals are incompatible.

And I forgot to mention about using a different input port on the TV: this is probably the best idea.

Hi Everyone,

I don't know why ppl always reply is this way. It looks like some are implying that this person is stupid for asking what's a simple question. USB as a 'Universal' suitable for transmitting data of any kind it is capable of transmitting audio and video data.

You can get USB to VGA adapters as strange as that may sound. It is basically a small graphics adapter that shows up as an additional graphics card. I can see no reason as to why a USB to HDMI adapter would not exist. Granted the bandwidth of USB is limited and may not been capable of managing full resolution HDMI however a lower resolution could still be achieved.

While writing this post that i have just found a direct USB to HDMI adapter supporting up to 'UXGA 1600x1200 or 720p' resolution made by Atlona 'USB to HDMI Converter. Model: AT-HDPiX'. Looks expensive but goes to prove a point. Im sure there will be others. Personally I would go the VGA route if you can. Depending on the version of VGA you can get some very high resolutions. This is limited by you graphics card and the device your connecting to and some TVs don't have very high resolution VGA inputs. However most are of a perfectly acceptable resolution and should also provide a stable and accurate image. Resolution is not everything. Im not sure HDMI is worth the extra cash if you don't have support already. This is assuming that you do have support for VGA.

Hi,

I got a USB to HDMI kit online, I can now connect my laptop to my HD ready 42" LG's HDMI port and picture is spot on. The kit has a USB to DVI converter, I guess to convert the USB to a Digital DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapter so I can connect my HDMI cable. Also came with a seperate audio lead as DVI does not carry sound, which I have connected my laptop to my cinema system. works a treat.
