Please could a boffin explain to me the properties of de-icer and how it works as I think it's amazing.

Simply put it is a water soluble liquid that lowers the freezing point of water when it is mixed. It works in the same way as anti-freeze. A common anti-freeze is ethylene glycol which is very water soluble and the freezing point of a 50% aqueous ethylene glycol solution is -37 oC.
