I have McAfee anti virus AND (?!) AVAST. Is this wise or should I cancel, say, AVAST?

I'm happy with Avast - the free version; so if I'd paid for McAfee I'd be happy to let it go. You should also get malware protection from somewhere like Malwarebytes

I purchased my new Windows 10 Lap Top three months ago & paid about £40 to install McAfee. I didn't realise I already had a free AVAST AV for a limited time. Now AVAST want £35 to renew my subscription. Still not sure what to do. Also I've just spotted an AVAST warning - 'Secure line VPN not connected'. ???
