am i insured
4 Answers
My now ex-partner bought a car for me and is paying it up. I have had an accident and although I thought that I was the owner they are saying that it is my ex-partner and because of that I am not insured. My ex-partner is not on the insurance I am the registered keeper of the car and there is no animosity between self and partner. I bought her a car that I am paying up as well, they are of equal value and at the time a gesture to one another. This is now causing big problem as the insurers are indicating that they are not going to honour the insurance. I am worried sick and don't know what to do about it. I genuinely believed that I was paying a legitimate insurance, was fully covered and no problems. Does anyone have any idea of what my rights are or what I can do about this?

As I understand it, you have had an accident in a car that your ex is the Registered Keeper of.
What is important is the insurance document. Are you insured to drive any vehicle at all? If so, does it allow you to drive other vehicles with the owner's consent?
It seems to me you are each buying a car, but are driving each other's.

It seems quite a straightforward issue. Did you make sure you were insured to drive this specific vehicle, or does your insurance policy cover you to drive any vehicle. If the answer to either question is YES they you will be okay. If you weren't insured to drive it you claim will not be met and you may be charged with driving without insurance. Simple
As Ethel says, your post is not clear. My understanding is that you are driving a car which you are the registered keeper of and which was bought for you by your ex. You are paying on an insurance policy, which I assume is for the car you are driving.
Does that insurance policy show you as a named driver? If it does then it appears you should be covered. However, was there anything in the insurance proposal you submitted to get the insurance about the ownership of the car? Could it be that you did not declare on the proposal that your ex had bought the car, and the insurance co. has now found out that this is the case and is saying the policy is void?
The above is supposition. Even if it is the case, I can't see why the policy should be void - there must be lots of cases where one person buys a car for another (as a gift, for example which seems to be what has happened here) and the recipient insures it.
If you can't sort it out with the insurer go through their complaints procedure & then to their Ombudsman if necessary.
