Cheap car insurance
11 Answers
I recently recieved my renewal notice and found that it has increased by over £100 so naturally I am shopping around. The two cheapest quotes came from Admiral and Elephant; .. Because they are so cheap I'm a bit sceptical so can anyone give me any info on them? thanks.

Elephant is simply an additional trading name which has been used by Admiral for the past ten years:

Before you look for a quote decide what cover you need and that is what you have to look for in every quote.
When I went to renew my car insurance those same companies seemed cheaper but when I looked closer they didn't offer the cover I needed.
Lots of the cheap quotes are interesting but might not cover you for things you might need. Internet searches are ok but getting on the phone works better for me. You can ask exactly what is or isnt covered.
Also, once you have a few quotes for similar cover you can go back to your original (and maybe preferred?) insurers and ask them to price match with the same cover.
Good luck.

What I find strange is that after receiving an insurance renewal, is you can go to one of the many comparison websites and ask for a quote giving identical details of what you want and your existing insurnace company often come back a lot cheaper than what they quoted you in the renewal.
My company did this to me last year so I phoned and they knocked £60 off just for the cost of a phone call.
I would recommend going back to your present company and tell them you can get cover cheaper online. If they don't offer a reduction I would be surprised.

That is the way insurers operate - they offer an attractive premium to new customers to tempt them ; and once they have got you , they rely on peoples inertia / ' loyalty ' in not shopping around when renewal time comes around . ( lots of people dont shop around ) . Afterall if people are prepared to just pay the renewal premium thats all adding to company's bottom line , which as I said is what the company hopes will happen - and often does .
However if you get a quote from the same insurer as a ' new ' customer OR as you state , negotiate with them , you will almost invariably get a better deal

Coincidently i received my renewal on Monday for £259. I did the various comparison websites and liked a quote for £208. I phoned my present insurer to say I wouldn't be renewing with them this year. The girl on the line said can I ask you a few questions as we have alternative policies with other underwriters this year. She asked away and eventually came back with a quote for £177. I said what's changed? She said I've removed use of vehicle abroad and provision of a courtesy car, neither of which I needed. I renewed there and then. It always pays to phone and not accept the first price.
