First one.
Second means it is.
I remember being taught that the only time there's an apostrophe in its, is when it's an abbreviation of it is.

Is this correct please?
Yes, mrs c. Whoever taught you that was right.
First
no mrs chappie, you are wrong. There is also an apostrophe when there is an abbrieviation of "it has"
as in "it's got an apostrophe"
Is this a poll?
But would you ever write 'It's got...'?
I would be inclined to write 'It has...'

Thanks peeps. I was thinking more of when I've seen it as....its'. Am I right in thinking there will never be an apostrophe after its?
Correct, Mrs C
No, there wouldn't be an apostrophe after ITS, the same as you wouldn't put an apostrophe after HIS.
(I put them capitals so as not to confuse with quotation marks, not to shout!!).
Thanks all. That's good to know.
The thing is that if the rules were simple there would be an apostrophe his. Or to be fair, since whatever it is belongs to "him", not after "his"; there'd be an apostrophe after "him". Him's wallet.
Isn't there some theory that we used to write e.g. "John his book" and that got abbreviated to "John's book" ? Trouble with that is that if we wrote "Jane her book" it would be "Jane'r book", or is 'her' itself a late development ?
