Telephone Interview

After passing a speed and accuracy test last week (for an admin position), I've been asked to take part in a telephone interview on Tuesday afternoon. I've never had one of these before and I'm starting to worry. Has anyone had a telephone interview before, and was it like a face-to-face interview? What sort of questions did they ask and how long did it last? And did you get the job? Please give me some advice and tips, I really want this job!

Please don't worry about a telephone interview - in my experience (as interviewer as well as interviewee) they are no different from a face to face exchange - but have the added benefit (from your point of view) that you do not have to think about how you are presenting yourself in terms of your body language and facial expressions! Just make sure you are somewhere quiet when you are expecting the call, so you can concentrate on giving the best responses without any distractions. Good luck ...

Well, I've never taken one, but I've given one!

The first contact people have with a company is the person who answers the phone, so it is very important. What I was looking for was a clear telephone voice, ability to take relevant notes, courtesy and the ability to deal with all types of people, including remaining calm and professional when someone is rude.

One tip that might help you - stand up during the interview! Somehow it makes you think and sound more professional.

Think of some questions they might ask you, write some answers down just in case they ask that question. It must be easier to do it by phone than in person, they are trusting with not looking at you. You are probably are close to getting the job and they want a quick conversation with you. Speak clearly at all times.
