Tax & National Insurance
1 Answers
I work part-time and my estimated earnings for this tax year will be around £6k. My tax code is 647L. It's now the new tax year and I am paying tax and national insurance. Is this right? I know I am allowed to earn £6,470 before paying tax and if I don't earn that amount do I have to wait until the end of the tax year and claim any overpaid money. Having worked full-time for many years (too many) I don't know how it works. I do not have any other income. Many thanks for any advice.

If you are paid weekly then you will be taxed on anything earned over £124.50 in the week (or cumulatively anything over £124.50 x the week no. you are now in). If monthly then anything over £539.58 on the same basis.
Presumably you've earned more than than if you are being taxed so far? Your tax code has nothing at all to do with national insruance. You'll pay that if you earn more than £110 in any given week regardless of cumulative figures or tax codes.
