Deeds at home.... after the mortgage was paid in full. And we was just wondering what would happen if they had a fire and the Deeds where distroyed.? Do you need to keep your Deeds safe?...Would there be a way of getting them if you didnt have them.? Many thanks

No everything is on computer now at the Land Registry. Once the lien was taken off the house by the Mortgage company they would have informed Land Registry and they would have updated their records.
I had the deeds to my house long before the mortgage was paid off. The house was registered at the Land Registry and the mortgage company didn't want the costs of storing documents that are now of historical interest only.
My dad kept his deeds and other important stuff in a metal box.
It's good to keep them safe if you have them though - if you go to sell and have to produce copies of old deeds, the Land Registry charge to do this (only £3, but still) and you could photocopy them for nothing...
We bought our house without a mortgage and got to wondering where our 'deeds' were. I was advised by the Land Registry that they no longer issue 'Deeds' as everything is now recorded on their computer system rather than hand written.
Yes, indeed. Properties built within the last 20 years or so are unlikely to ever had the old style deeds.
Isn't it the case though that if the property is unregistered (ours apparently is) you have to be that more careful with the original deeds? The mortgage company returned our deeds when the mortgage was paid but didn't offer to store them
All our important "stuff" is in a heavy, fireproof/floodproof locked case.
If the property is unregistered then you can register it at the Land Regisry, which will have to be done when the property changes hands anyway.

It the mean time it is vital that the deeds are stored where they can't be stolen, burnt, soaked or damaged in any way. Some people choose to store them with their solicitor or bank, for a fee.
Arrods - yes you do and the next time the house is sold. the soolicitor will register it

otherwise most land (83%) is registered and have superceded deeds
In the event of adispute they are however useful ...
