Can You Get A Parking Fine If There Are No Signs To Say You Shouldn't Drive That Way?

At our work we've recently been told the Council has said that people shouldn't be driving to the building using certain routes and apparently cameras have been installed here and there and you're liable to get a fine if you use said routes. I had a look this morning and there's not any "no entry" signs or anything like that on the roads they've mentioned. So if you DID get a fine, could it be challenged as there's nothing there to tell you that you CAN'T go that way? They're talking about putting bollards in place at some point which would make it obvious, but at the moment, there's absolutely nothing there at all.

Who told your work that the council said that? Restrictions can only be enforced if there are sufficient signs, lines or other form of notice.

You could phone your council's highway department for clarification - I certainly would

Why would the Council be telling your employer about routes employees need to avoid?

Yes good point douglas! if theres double yellow lines and you stop to ask for directions or to check with someone whether your allowed to use the road

Apparently the council informed the residents (work) in our area and the building reception informed us. It’s mainly to do with the fact people were taking shortcuts to the garage which they don’t want. But part of that “shortcut” actually takes you to our building (for drop offs, pick ups etc).

Sounds like ill-informed gossip. The only way to know for sure is to contact the Highways Department.

My council has all the Traffic Regulation Orders viewable online, maybe yours does to

It would be covered by a Traffic Management Order (TMO) so contact your council to see which TMOs apply to your workplace.

It might be the TMO has only just been notified and is not yet in effect which would explain the absence of signs.

Are there any notices/stickers on lamposts/roadsigns announcing intension to restrict access at some date in future. Sounds to me like it could be something thats going to happen but hasnt happened yet

well any appeal is gonna be on "lack of signage"
and proportionality ( from TTT's fave act of parliament on Human Rights)

and yes there is a word in English prounced " sigh-nidge " - like garage or amperage( or wattage)

it is more likely that they dont want thro traffic but only residential, and the rules for that are different

The other thing is that you need to re-read the Highway Code - parking restrictions, they need to tell you now on entering the area and not on every street....
