ITV dread the end of the TV licence. Advertising revenue is drying up, there simply won't be enough to go round.

dont watch itv either or any freeview for that matter, gbn news is the only thing i watch on normal channels, stream everything else
Cheapest and best channel. For me it’s hyper good value.

It’ll be £172 a year (£14.33) a month. For the number of channels available, plus radio, plus iPlayer plus their sport and news coverage - I think it’s a bargain.

The rise this year is especially steep because the fee has been frozen for the past couple of years.

But I get why this must infuriate some people. It must be like being forced to pay for Fox News even though you never watch it and despise everything it stages for.

Understandable

Have you seen this:

I think your problem may be that your television [i]can[\i] receive BBC broadcasts which means you have to pay a licence…but surely there should be a way round this if you don’t watch the channel.

Going to do some digging.

There should be but there isn't. The requirement for a TV Licence is determined by you having a device on which you can watch or record any TV channel via any platform, as it is broadcast. It does not matter whether your TV is capable of receiving BBC or not. Even if it isn't, you still need a licence.

As you say, it's like having to pay to produce the Daily Telegraph when you only read The Sun.

Well sp - i would like the choice of whether or not I want to avail myself of this tax ,'bargain' or otherwise

My understanding was the same - if you have a device which is *capable* of connecting to the BBC you’d need a licence.

But it’s not true now. You need a licence if your device is capable of receiving broadcasts from *any* live TV service (e.g. Sky, Virgin, Freeview, Freesat).

If you watch live on streaming services (e.g. ITVX, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now, Sky Go) you also need a licence.

I assume that part of the licence pays for infrastructure and maintenance - that all the above channels make use of?

See my post at 16.09. I know where you’re coming from. Even if Fox were the greatest channel in the world it would drive he made that I had to pay for it. Same with TalkTV and GB News, but I now think that you’re not just paying for the BBC - you’re also paying for infrastructure.

Not sure about that, but that what the TV Licencing page seems to suggest.
GB News is a good reminder of why we need the BBC - for all its anachronistic funding - and other quality news channels
Happy to pay the new rate. Very good value for money.
£3.30 a week for everything the BBC offers - what fantastic value.
With no annoying adverts, that alone is worth something.

No one can like everything the BBC offers, but there is plenty of programmes to like, including great drama.

For those who think the BBC is full of left wing followers, wait until Labour gets in, then people will think the Corporation is full of right wingers. The party in power will attract opposing views. That's the way it's always been.
It occurred to me that I spend more on Radio Times to see what's on TV than I do on the licence to watch it. Yes, I know there are cheaper options, but I like the format of Radio Times.

You always knew it was the run up to Christmas in our house in the 80s because mum would buy the double edition of the Radio Times and TV Times then the whole family would use a highlighter pen to mark out the programmes we HAD to watch.
How else are they going to fund Lineker’s imminent pay rise, his punishment for posting anti Tory propaganda ?
Just to point out ..."could reportedly rise"....
I have never heard anybody call out the blatantly biased clowns as anything but riddled with left wing ridden bias and a leftie woke agenda whether it be a lie & bore or Conservative government.
bazwillrun wins the bingo game!
Ha ha ha…that’s actually a quality oat. You literally can’t improve on that - there are no cliches left!
Found one!
