whats the term for when a horse is skittish and raises up on its hind legs? is it bucking?

also, how would a rider overcome this?

there is an earthquake in my story and the riders horse is getting skittish. i need some advice to make things realistic.

The term is "rearing".

Rearing is when they go up on their hind legs, bucking is when they kick their hind legs out behind them.

A rider has to lean right forward and in an emergency would probably drop their arms around the horses neck in an effort to stay in the saddle.

They would poriobably be saying something like 'whoa lad' 'steady boy', or something similar.

Skittish tends to mean that the horse is getting very fidgety - probably bouncing about on the spot etc.

Rearing is one of the most dangerous things that a horse can do to it's rider - if it rears up too far it can over balance and come crashing down backwards on top of it's rider.
