Editing a movie
9 Answers
I have a sony camcorder which has no direct connection from the camcorder to the computer. I am using the camcorder disk and burning it to the hard drive using dvd shrink. My problem is editing frame by frame and I can't find any programs that will do this. Most orograms want to download from the camcorder direct (I can't do this) and I can't use windows movie maker even if I rename the VOB files to MPG. So it looks like I shall have to purchase a program - but I need one whereby I can run a short film through frame by frame, edit out the mistakes and then save the new version. Can anyone recommend a program that will do this?

You can download a free version of Nero or go to there website and get their DVD maker software. You can edit out as much as you want and it re-srites it to a DVD disk so all your friends and family can watch your footage (if appropriate !!)
Also I dont understand why you use DVD shrink in the process ?
It's great for condesning a DVD into burning it onto a sho bought DVD, but apart from that - isn't needed for what you are asking to do. You can tranfer the files from your DVD Camcorder disk by dragging and dropping them into your specific folder. You dont need any software for that. You then chose these files in Nero to create your new film and edit them using the Nero Software. Its not something that is easily done first time - a little practice is needed.

Your camcorder probably uses a firewire link; if your computer doesn't have this port, then you'll be able to buy a firewire card cheaply:

fo3nix, my camcorder does not have a firewall socket. It uses 8cm mini dvd's. rojash, I am downloading the dvd using dvd shrink (at % shrinkage) just to get it on the hard drive. The reason is that the dvd's I am using I want eventually to all add together and create 4-5 dvd's (edited) and then burnt with shrink in reauthor mode onto a 4.7GB 12cm disc. By using shrink the file changes from whatever the camcorder has it as to a VOB file and I can also rename that to MPG if I want to play the track on WMP. I also find that many authoring tools only accept MPEG or MPEG-2.......ok, having said all that I have Nero 6 and Nero 7 but I think the DVD maker comes at a very expensive price.
The sony creates a title every time I switch it on and record, so I could have 6 titles with a thumbnail of each title. I need to access, say title 3, by individual frame so I can edit it. I have many programs in which I can view, burn, shrink, decode etc., but I do not have a program that will allow me to run through a film frame by frame.
Unfortunately, A DVD camcorder is not really suitable for what you are trying to achieve, as the video is recorded in compressed format that is not really intended to be edited. I believe there are programs that will edit it bit the results will not be very satisfactory. However, you are also further compressing the files using DVD shrink, so I doubt very much if you will be able to edit them. In any case, if you don't have room on your hard drive, for the originals, you definitely will not have the space required to edit them and re-render them.
