Baby rabbits

My rabbit gave birth to 5 kits on Boxing Day.

I started feeding the mum, Jessica, a high fat diet specifically prepared for nursing mum's (it makes her produce so much milk that she has no option but to feed them just to get rid of the milk), but I've noticed in the last couple of days that the babies are feeding from mum as well as eating single bits of hay and drinking from the water bottle.

I can't find anything on the net about babies feeding from mum AND weaning at the same time, it seems to be an either or scenario.

I'm a bit worried that the babies are starting to wean at this early age, but if they are meant to be, then should I stop feeding Jessica the food I have been?

Anyone else experienced this??

Don't know much about rabbits, but my mate's dog (bitch) had pups 10 weeks ago. They fed her sardines to keep her coat glossy but stopped the special foods soon as pups were weaning. Not much help but maybe same applies to kits??

Hello Desperado, the babies seem to be OK, I'm not even sure they ARE eating the straw, I have a feeling they might just be copying mum.

I'll keep her on the high fat food and see how it goes. I just wondered if anyone had been in a similar situation.

Would you like a baby rabbit?? Free to good home :)

What kind of dogs did your friend have?
Cocker Spaniels. Too cute but didn't get the kids one. Yeah my daughter would like a baby rabbit. Just noticed adverts about rabbits all over page lol.

Aww cute little puppies. I know someone else who has a friend with puppy cocker spaniels, the pictures were very cute!

I am happy to pop a bunny in a shoe box and post it to you. Would you like a brown and white, black and white or a beige and white bunny??
Whichever bakes better in pies lmao
I had a look on line for you I a couldn't find much it did say that kits can take an interest in solid food after 2 weeks though??? sounded I bit early too me.

I would keep up her special diet esp now as if the kits are eating and drinking some other things you really want what small amount of milk they have to be as wholesome as possible.

Not funny!!

When they were born they didn't have any fur and their eyes were closed - not very pretty at all.

One of my friends made a comment about wrapping bacon around them and having 'buns in blankets' :(
