where do we stand regarding kids playing football in the road. The council have placed a notice banning ball games, but we still get the footballs in the garden and the kids just take it for granted that they have right of way
in our garden and retrieve them themselves .

I know this must be a pain, but isn't it better that they play ball than hang around with nothing to do? Surely they should be encouraged rather than banned?

This is a problem for all householders - and the cause of many long lasting feuds between neighbours.


You could report them to the council. In my experience such action results in no footballs (for a while) but lots of very noisy games and other disturbance as close to the house of the complainant as possible. All in daylight, of course, so no grounds for complaint.

Are they damaging your garden in any way? Are the parents' approachable?

If your property isn't being damaged, then what harm are they doing? this country nowadays is hellbent on getting people into trouble or reporting them for something or other, When me and my brother and sister were growing up we always played in the road, football, cricket (soft ball) rounders etc balls were always going into gardens but we used to appologise and carry on, there were never any repercussions, yes I know things are different now but don't you think that all the fuss people make over little things such as a ball in a garden just contributes to this change? Try turning a blind eye.
