re:land ownership

My late fathers great great great grandfather owned a lot of land. When checked with the land registry in jul 1998 it was not registered. Would the family be entitled to claim this land? If so, where do we start? I have gone into this totally blind and haven't a clue where to start, so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

It should have passed through his estate and the estate of anyone who owned it afterwards. If there were wills then may be possible to trace the ownership that way.

Might be worth checking with the Land Registry again as if there has been any sale or mortgage since they it may well now be registered.

Is there anyone in occupation of the land or using it?

There is still a lot of land and properties in England and Wales that is not registered at the Land Registry.

Legal owndership is proven by the Title Deeds in this case.
