I bought a Panasonic DVD recorder at a well known department store around four months ago, it worked fine when I bought it, but now it is not working properly and the store took it back to be repaired three weeks ago. They said it would take two weeks to repair, when I enquired why they still had it, they say it is going to be another two months! They haven't given me a replacement to use. I wondered where I stand with this. Should I ask for (1) a replacement while they are repairing my DVD player; (2) an extended guarantee when it eventually is returned as it is going to take so long; (3) or say I don't want the original DVD player back, and ask for a new one with a full year's guarantee there must be something seriously wrong with mine if it is taking so long to repair !

i would ask for all of the above - in reverse order! this is exceptionally poor treatment (particulalrly if this is a large company) and as a consumer you deserve better. sources of information about consumer law include trading standards (who i have found to be very helpful in the past) and the bbc's watchdog website. surely if it takes two months to fix its knackered?! or if they are waiting for parts, they should communicate with you better and be striving to keep your business both now and in the future. the dvd recorder should have a statutory one year guarantee and may be eligible for a refund anyway - check the small print of your receipt/guarantee. stick it to the big guys!!!
I bought the same item from Argos. I dont know what was wrong but after a couple of weeks assessing the repair they just replaced it. It seems this models must be prone to faults. What shop was it? I'm sure if your tell them politely that two months contravenes your consumer rights and you intend to go to trading standards they will give you a replacement.
