Trying to remember an old TV series

I remember watching a TV series back in the latter half of the 80s, but the only detail I remember was a Greek character called Spyros... I know it's very vague (!) but maybe someone can help shed some light on it!!!

Heres a shot in the dark for you mattfox - there was a BBC1 serialisation of Gerald Durrell's autobiographical work "My Family and Other Animals" shown during the late 80's.  (Its about Durrell's childhood on Corfu).

It starred Brian Blessed as Spiros , if I remember correctly - and had a really lovely title tune as well !!
