'Hi Ho Silver Lining' by Jeff Beck has been played towards the end of every wedding reception disco I've ever been to. When did this start? And why?

I have no idea, probably because i avoid weddings and funerals as much as possible.
The song was written by Larry Weiss and Scott English way back in the sixties.
Maybe these lines sum it up.

I see your sun is shining,
But I wont make a fuss,
Though its obvious.

Anything you want is yours now,
Only nothings for free,

I am so glad that such torment is not just restricted to Britain. Do you also have to put up with the Birdie Song and Agadoo?

I think it's played because there are too many spilled beers on the floor to do 'Oops up side our head' at the end of the night ;-)
Just to compound your misery...

Yes, I know. WHY??? Always, always always, certainly in the 70s and 80s, that bl***y song was played and all the people , thinking they were still young and "with it" would get up and shoogle around to it. OMG, memories of it are still the stuff of nightmares.
It started at the first wedding reception you went to, and has continued at each since.

I suspect only DJs would know why they choose it. Probably a catchy tune that clearly everyone appreciates.
G'day again BAv.

Errr...well maybe it is...i wouldn't know.
No, I don't put up with anything I abhor.
i have heard both those songs, many years ago....No thanks.
Didn't listen to them then...certainly won't now.
twenty-odd years ago, there used to be a mobile disco round my neck of the woods (Richmond, N. Yorks.) with,
"We do not play Silver Lining - guaranteed" written on the side of the van.
No matter how it ends, as long as it begins with this -

...so why post this question twice, silvertaff....?
perhaps he's a Moonie and gonna post it a few thousand times
the second time he posted it, he got better answers, so who can blame him.
