Great choice or 'political correctness gone mad'

Personally I wanted Tilda Swindon, but that was unlikely to ever happen.

Not a great watcher of Dr Who, it will be certainly interesting to see how it evolves.

I agree anbout Tilda Swinton, just edgy enough to carry it off.

Kris Marshall would have been my choice, stopped watching when Peter Capaldi started and am unlikely to start again now.

No idea who Jodie Whittaker is: but I guessed they'd chose an actress for the role. The gender change for The Master sort of implied it.

I'm not sure how it will work but I might give it another go, loved the Tennant and Eccleston series', went downhill for me with Matt Smith (more him) and not seen any of the Capaldi ones.

I'd like to get back in to it though. I used to love it. I wasn't too sure about Tilda Swinton, maybe a little too out there for me, but then it is The Doctor!

She was in all three series' of Broadchurch Old Geezer, the mum of the victim in the first series.

Will be strange her not having the put on accent she has in Broadchurch!

I was expecting some programme and build up like last time! Not much of a fanfare announcing it like that.

They could have Tardis'd on to Centre Court or something!

Every time they are tough shoes to fill, I hope she plays the role well.

Everything else in their world's up for change for the sake of it so why not the lead character in a kids TV show.

I doubt it's anything to do with political correctness - the role has evolved & the writers need to keep it as fresh as possible.

I think (& hope) she'll be good as the Doctor. For me, Tilda Swinton would have been an awful choice.

I wasn't overly keen on Peter Capaldi or Matt Smith - David Tennant absolutely nailed the part though.

She's a very fine actress, and I think she'll do well with it, but she'll catch some stick because of her gender. Personally I wanted Idris Elba ( with me as the new companion :-)

I suppose Stephen Fry was never in line for the role so I'm happy with this decision....

She's an excellent actress....it'll be interesting and open up new avenues.....x

pcgm for me - dont like the idea at all - although I liked Michelle Gomez who played Missy - now that would have complicated things if she had become the new doctor.

David Bradley is reprising Hartnell in the role - he made a brief appearance at the end of the recent series, perhaps to return in the Christmas special? The story does hark back to -

"...1966 serial The Tenth Planet, which saw the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions travel to the South Pole only to grapple with the original Mondasian Cybermen as they attempted to take over the human race." (Radio Times)
