Basically it’s a feud between Alex Godman’s family of ‘businessmen’/gangsters, exiled from Russia years ago and Vadim, the Moscow based gangster thick with the Kremlin and FSB.
In the first episode Alex’s uncle tried to assassinate Vadim, and was murdered in revenge. Ever since that Alex, who’s been trying to stay away from dodgy dealings, has been sucked into revenge for his uncle’s murder.
He’s allowed dodgy Israeli politician Semyon Kleiman, associate of his late uncle,to invest in his bank in return for Kleiman helping him destroy Vadim’s operations in India and the Czech Republic. By now Vadim has realised what’s been going on: last week he tried to frame Kleiman on a rape charge and this week he started a fully fledged operation to target Alex, his friends and family.
Alex has employed Kleiman’s driver Joseph to coordinate providing protection for them all. With limited success.
They don’t appear to be the most efficient crew ever.
Meanwhile Alex’s ex girlfriend has got pregnant by his dad and wants to keep the baby. Alex and his sister try to bribe her to go away somewhere. Not sure where that bit of the plot is going but presumably will be relevant later

"I gave up after wasting 4 hours. James Norton is blank and wooden; not a single likeable character "
I think it is one of those series where you not expected to find any of the characters "likeable" as such. I don't care for any of the characters much although I do quite like the Czech henchman Benes.
The only truly "good" people are the female victims. In real life though there are no perfect characters. I like it for the authentic dialog and the locations:; it is a bit slow moving (that is one reason I can understand it!) but in a way that adds to the menace as well as filling the airtime.

Fantastic series but i don't understand one bit, even after your clear precis. I am addicted to it.
James Norton? Can't stand him......why must he always have that "sickly" grin on his face......he smirked all the way through Granchester.......can't stand him....he as an effeminate look about him LOL.
