In the new version, whenever a contestant phones a friend Clarkson informs the audience that the friend has a member of the programme’s staff (or something to that effect) with them to ensure fair play. Well, it appears about 10 people a night are in the studio trying to become contestants, and if each contestant has three friends for phoning, does that mean that 30 members of ITV staff are sent around the UK to stand by in case....?

I find it hard to believe they send 30 members of ITV staff around the Country just in case their friend A) actually even gets in the chair and B) decides to call them.

Haha Tills. After he took the dosh the player said Eden...….He was a school teacher too. :))
I watch the Classic Millionaire on Freesat and the thing that annoys me most is when the friend answers the phone and they always make a show of feigning surprise ---- ''good grief or my goodness'' as if they don't know .
Easy come easy go Tills. (^_*)
Tilly, I believe it was Eden's long-honed skills as Foreign Secretary that ultimately led the country to Suez. As far as I know Wilson served chiefly on the Board of Trade.
well Tills dont think they will let you ask answerbank as a friend
but she might get a really fit ITV person in her home to ensure she plays fair anyway
Well, any of them could have been FS! I just don't know which one wasn't...Churchill?

Jno, I always play fair. My middle name is 'firm but fair'.

Mrs.Firm But Fair Trotter, as my pupils used to call me.
I think you will find that Anthony Eden was prime minister during the Suez crisis in the 1955-6

Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, KG, MC, PC was a British Conservative politician who served three periods as Foreign Secretary and then a relatively brief term as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. Wikipedia
When was Harold Wilson Foreign Secretary?
The choices were -

Churchill
Douglas-Home
Eden
Macmillan
Ah. That makes a lot more sense!
My phone a Friend would be the question setter, then they'd be no problem.

I agree Darcy but when it started back in the day, you couldn’t Google anything quickly.
gollob, yes, I know, that's why I said "ultimately".
This has come up before.Yes,there is a member of staff sitting around in each of the possible 'phone a friend' houses. Very expensive, which is why it is on ITV , paid for out of their £ Billions of advertising revenue ! ITV has a lot more money than it knows what to do with !
/// ITV has a lot more money than it knows what to do with ///

And it all comes from the same place as the BBC licence money (i.e. Joe Public) but you don't get people whinging about that - odd isn't it.)
How does it come from 'Joe public'?
