1917 Film Review

Not going to actually post a review as they generally get shot to bits by moaners who rarely(if ever) attend the cinema and generally just snipe because they’re bored or have little else to do.
All I’ll say is if you don’t go and see this on the big screen(as Sam Mendes wants you to) then it’s your loss. If you do, make sure you have a handkerchief ready for the last 5 minutes.

From the caption just prior to the closing titles I’d surmise it’s more a compendium of stories gathered from the memories of the grandfather of Sam Mendes.
Just my opinion mind.

His grandfather ran messages between the lines. Though the film is dedicated to him, the story itself is mostly fictional.

The memsahib is just booking tickets for tomorrow afternoon.Always interested in films about the war to end all wars.
From what I can make out from the previews it appears to have a similar story line to Gallipoli only on a different front. Won't elaborate.

My nephew saw this film about a week ago (he's in Spain) and has absolutely raved about it. Intend visiting the cinema in the near future.

It is amazingly well edited - it's absolutely impossible to see where any changes in scene shooting and editing are - the whole thing just flows seamlessly in almost real time.

I am sure it will scoop every single technical Oscar there is come the time - it's faultlessly produced.

Very interesting interview with George MacKay (one of the lead actors) in The Times last Saturday. It was so 'choreographed' that there was five months' rehearsal before shooting began. No single shot was longer than eight and a half minutes, but they were digitally 'stitched together' in post-production to give the appearance of an uninterrupted flow.

I haven't seen this film, so can only try to imagine, but I remember being astounded at the opening scene of La La Land - now I bet that took some rehearsing, too!

Very good film but slightly over hyped imo.The set designs impressed me more than anything. The story line was, again imo, not that spectacular. It was no better than Passchendale as far as a storyline but minus the 'love interest'. 6/10

Long time since I watched a film at the cinema on a big screen. I was amazed at the seating arrangements. Back in the Gods we had double settees to sink into.With my legs stretched out I couldn't touch the seats in front. A new experience for me. Perhaps I may pay more visits to the cinema. I was nauseated by the stink of popcorn as soon as we entered the foyer. Young girls wandering around with massive buckets of popcorn. Don't they get fed at home? :-)

I tend to agree with Retro. I remember going to the cinema whilst staying with my cousin in California about 30 years ago and when we exited, I couldn't believe how much rubbish was left on the floor of the cinema. McDonalds wrappers, coffee cups and all sorts of crap. I was quite shocked. Fast forward 30 years to the UK and it is the same here.
