If you’ve seen any of it, what do you think? Very harsh on the royals, except Diana, I reckon. Charles has no positive qualities in this, and The Queen only a few. Yet it’s still a wonderful watch.
“The actor laying Charles...” - now there’s a storyline! It is annoying he hangs his head all the time, and that Thatcher’s head tilts to the left so much. But it is still a cracking series
I have changed my mind about this series since I first posted after watching the first two episodes.
I think the series has attempted to show what life was like in this country mainly as a result of Mrs Thatchers policies e g very high unemployment and Mrs Thatcher's opposition to sanctions against South Africa. And the Queens possible response to this- we don't know what went on on those meetings.
One thing I thought was done well and that was the portrayal of the misery of both Charles and Diana. It's usually only seen from her side but I think he was very very unhappy from the start.
But I do agree about the ghastly voice of Mrs T. Why Gillian Anderson was directed to speak like that is beyond me. Ludicrous and excruciating.
Thatcher had media training and put on a voice for television appearances. It was supposed to be her. ‘Caring’ voice - slow and quiet.
The mistake the programme makes is having her use that voice all the time - in her kitchen, meeting the Queen, on the junket to Balmoral. Her normal voice was never heard, just the very affected one for all occasions.
I think Series 4 is the weakest so far. A couple of episodes were duff, and the artistic licence went beyond credible.
There has been plenty of nit-picking surrounding all 4 seasons of this programme. I heard on the radio today that someone had even questioned Charles's angling technique, as portrayed on screen! To paraphrase Brian Conley, 'It's a drammaaaa'.
I didn't realise that Gillian Anderson and Peter Morgan, the writer/creator of the Crown are partners in real life. I've only watched a couple of episodes so far but find it very biased towards Dians
