Goodbye lenin - a german film about a brother and sister whose mother goes in to a coma while the berlin wall comes down and because she is in a fragile state when she wakes up and wont be able to deal with any shocks, they have to change their new lives to make it seem like everythings still fine!
Delicatessen - another french film, by the same person who made Amelie, its really odd but really likeable a definate must see for anyone who likes amelie. its about a cannibal butcher and a circus performer!
Kung Fu hustle - Japanese kung fu film, you have to see it to believe it really!
Delicatessan is a great film, its very very funny. I can never decide whether I like that or Amelie more.
Audition and Ichi the Killer are good. Ichi is possibly the grossest most toecurling film I have ever seen.A bit of gangster flick.
Malena is near the top of my list (Italian) Its a coming of age film set in wwii, a lot to do with teenage sexuality, I suppose.
The best has to be The Passion of the Christ. I was gutted for days after watching that. Do i need to tell you what its about?
Good to see some Jeunet fans here! :)
Here are some of my favourites:
- Delicatessen - link
- La Cit des enfants perdus aka The City of Lost Children - link
- Le Fabuleux destin d'Amlie Poulain aka Amlie - link
- Un long dimanche de fianailles aka A Very Long Engagement - link
- Das Boot (The Boat) - link
- Goodbye Lenin! - link
- Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo - link
- Batoru rowaiaru aka Battle Royale - link
- Akira - link
- Nochnoy Dozor aka Night Watch - link
Christiane F. is a very disturbing film about the children of 'Zoo Station', Berlin. It portrays their addiction to heroin and a must see film. Goodbye Lenin! is really funny but also shows a perspective of the transition from East Germany to unified Germany. Das Boot, arguably one of the best war films of all time.
Akira was supposed to have influenced the Matrix, and likewise if you like The Matrix then you'd most likely enjoy 'Night Watch' which I think is the best film in that genre for quite awhile.

Sorry! Forgot to say what its about.
Osama takes place at the beginning of Taliban rule when all females are banned from working. To make ends meet, a young girl dresses as a boy and tries to earn a living for her family, who have no male adult to support them.
Unfortunately, the Taliban arrive and round up all the boys for indoctrination at a specialist training camp and mistakenly take the girl along.
Her identity is discovered after her period starts and she is brought to trial and expects to be stoned to death. I won't say more, but it is fantastic.
Run Lola Run - a film about a girl called Lola and her attempts to help her boyfriend. There are three alternative endings and certain things about each version of events that change, altering ultimately what happens to Lola and her bloke. It's a brilliant film that you have to give look. It's german.
La Haine - French film, translates as the hate. It's black and white, very amusing, touching and horrible in places. A bit gritty too. It's about riots that occur after the police shoot a guy and the retaliation of his friends, and other youngsters eager to cause trouble in the name of others
City of God, as mentioned up there. It's about the life of a boy brought up in the slums, and what happens to him and his friends as they grow up, leading to confrontations and gang warfare in the backstreets. I think it's Brazilian? Very hard hitting and not too pleasant in places, but amazingly made and very thought provoking.
Chungking express is a Hong Kong new wave film, which is a bit weird but worth watching if you're interested in seeing as many different films as possible.
Finally, I'd agree with Delicatessen, it's pretty hilarious.
Not sure which I'd say the greatest is, but I think my favourite is Run Lola Run. It has a good soundtrack too
