What the most overrated films you can think of.

Going by stars given and the arty farty film critics guides etc. I would have to conclude that Dr Stranglove has to be one of them. I simply do not get the hype of the film. It is, in my humble opinion, poorly acted, poorly shot and just boring.

Others will include

Lawrence of Arabia (good but not great)
El Marachi (just boring if you ask me)
Titanic (all those Oscars?????)
Ghandi (good, but one viewing is all you need)
Crouching Tiger (what a load of poppyc0ck)

Am I right in my depiction and can you think of any more overrated stuff that the text books insist are essential viewing?

If you are referring to the original 3 Star Wars, then you need a sound spanking young lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Masterclass, all of them.

The three new pretenders are not great but the originals are simply fantastic.

Never seen White Christmas, but the song is nice.

Fanriffic i love it's a wonderful life and we also watched it on xmas eve, my fiance however was a bit like yourself. He said for a feel good movie it left him feeling depressed lol

I agree with you about Crouching Tiger, what a load of old tosh.

I often feel let down by British films. I loved the tv series The League of gentlemen, but the film was absolutely awful.
Shawn of the Dead was also mighty boring.
I also thought The mexican was a waste of time, although it was not a British made film.
Leaving Las Vegas was rubbish.

I always find Tom Cruise movies overrated, but maybe that is just because I cannot stand him.

the league of gentlement film was rubbish but the tv series is genius (howzzat?) Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are crap. My favourite film of all time is On the Buses tho - class

Shaun of the Dead is genius.

It hurts me to say this as a martin scorsese fan but Raging Bull was sooooooooooo boring.


Star Wars (great for kids but it's not ok for every boyfriend I have ever had to still be obsessed with it)

The Sting, somehow I got roped into watching this crap when I mentioned my lve of Butch Cassidy and the SUndance Kid.

I found the recent king kong boring, went to bed half way through. And Lord of the blooming Rings, was a pile of boring poop too, we saw it at the cinema, and i fell asleep about an hour in, only to be woken by the sub, but i fell asleep again untill it was over. hehe

harry potter is a load of over rated baloney, who does whats his name think he is? i dont like him, he thinks he's gods gift, phhff i dont think so!

I did like the bourne and die hard films though

Mmmmmm interesting. Yes Raging Bull is worth a watch once, but is fairly forgettable. And given the fact Christian Bale beats De Niro hands down on the weight loss thing in The Machinist puts pay to the whole "realism" thing.

Harry Potter, never seen any of them, never even read the books. I have no plan to.

Lord of the Rings?????????? Truly magnificant in every aspect. I guess you didn't read the books first, no?

Again Texas Chainsaw Massacre is very good and NOT worthy of the list.

Shaun of the Dead is very good as the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, biut I have never seen the movie.

American Beauty is good and again not worthy of my list.

The Thin Red Line - relies too heavily on 'surprise' cameos (ooh look, there's George Clooney on screen for 5 minutes, and here's John Travolta for three) while still managing to be relentlessly depressing.

Practically any film with either Tom Hanks (Road To Perdition an honourable exception) or Robin Williams in it.

And of course (good call, Goodsoulette) - Star Wars!! Not bad as such, but worthy of its place at the top of so many 'best film of all time' lists? Don't think so.

BTW - a big MMWWWWAAAAHHHH to B00 for quite correctly stating that Dolly's tender, genuine, heartfelt, understated original of I Will Always Love You piddles all over Whitney's mawkish, gut-wrenching, over-produced, uber-shouty cover version from a great height.

Unfortunately, an advanced education and a worldly view are needed to understand art. I would suggest movies like, The Goonies, Debbie Does Dallas, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and maybe, Dude! Where's My Car? are more for your intellect.
