Could we ever manage to expunge the greatest evil of all from the world? Of course I mean all the religions, all as bad as each other. I cannot see how intelligent people can belive in such clap trap and to kill and harm others who have the temerity to no believe. Will mankind ever be able to shake of this millstone?

/// Religion is just a crutch for weak people to lean on! ///
That is rather a bigoted sweeping statement to make, perhaps you have never been in a life threatening position.
There have been many strong and brave men, who in the midst of battle have felt much support from their own particular religion.
Even those who are normally anti-religion, may I add.

You *could* argue that religion is responsible for many of the world's ills - from the treatment of the Palestinians by the Jews on the West Bank; the random acts of terrorism by Muslims, Protestants and Catholics; the effect that statements issued by the Pope have on gay people...
However, many take succour from their religion. The problem the rest of us secularists have is when those of faith try to impose the rules on the rest of us.
As an analogy - to me, it's like the Freemasons trying to get the rest of us to abide by their rules, despite the fact that we're not 'in the club'.

To answer your question"will mankind ever be able to shake off this millstone ?
No. The following was printed in the Washington Post, written by Muqtedar Khan, Director of Islamic studies, University of Delaware.
// Along with the idea of God and prophets, the Quran is the thing that Muslims hold the dearest. My children have been listening to it since even before they were born. I use to recite it to them while they were still in the womb. Their children will be reciting it to them when they will be lowered in to their tomb. Believe me, there is nothing more precious to Muslims than the Quran, and watching people toss it into fire, will be horrifying. I would rather burn in fire myself, than watch a Quran burn.//

<<perhaps you have never been in a life threatening position.
There have been many strong and brave men, who in the midst of battle have felt much support from their own particular religion. >>
In <life threatening positions> people turn to all sorts of <crutches>:
Alcohol, drugs, self-harm, delusional fantasies, mindless aggression etc
It seems you have placed religion in its proper place.

d9f1c7 You will never expunge the books of fables if for no other reason people want to have an entity to praise or blame for anything they can not understand or alter.
Right from the start, in our bible claims are made about the moment of creation which cannot be substantiated . They can't be no one was there !
In Genesis 1 It repeats again and again And God Said , And God Said, And God Said ......
The writer of those words was not there to hear those words . So it is pure fantasy . This fantasy continues throughout Genesis .
Adam and Eve were the only 2 humans in the world and after Cain killed Abel there were then only 3 but Cain went on walk-about and found himself a wife !
Where did she come from ? What's more Cain built a city ! Who for ? Even with his fantasy wife there are only 4 people in the world ? And Eve back with Adam only produced another child Seth about 80/90 years later when she was 130 years old.

AOG - "Please don't take the actions of one particular murderous, savage and evil religion, to condemn all other peaceful religions."
To which religion are you referring?
I would siggest that there is no religion that preaches violence and hatred per se, but that there are extremists who choose to interperet aspects of their doctrine as meaning that it sanctions death and damage to non-believers, and that applies to virtually all religions - certainly Christianity.
