How do I know when a cam belt needs changing?

Cambelts are part of scheduled servicing.  This means that after a certain number of miles, or years, it should be replaced.  Depending on the manufacturer/type of engine this can be 48,000, 60,000, 72,000 or 96,000 miles.

Of course if you have oil or coolant contamination on the belt, or any cuts, grooves etc. then it is advisable to replace the belt since it will eventually rot the material.
