86mph? No problem!
According to the front page of the Mail, we won't be fined for 86 on a motorway. A common sense move or precursor to death and destruction?

i done 100mph+ on a motorway & an A road yesterday & didn't get fined,
maybe cos i didn't get caught YET.
but there was talks of raising motorway speeds to 80mph again, but most are going slower than 70mph to save fuel, so i think now it is pointless for most,
they should also consider harsher sentences for repeat offenders for more serious driving offences

I would agree on the 80MPH on Motorways for cars due traffic, more often car's travels at that speed, but I honestly think that they should reinstate the HGVs to 60 like it used to be, there was no clogging on middle lanes, coaches should also be allowed back into the outside lane. did you see this build up of traffic prior to the HGV 56mph? I know not as I was driving the things.
It is highly unlikely that speeds on the motorways will be increased legally due to the fact that most cars run at there best fuel economy at approx 60 MPH , with the polution problems caused by traffic, and europe expecting all member countries to lower their polution levels it would be unlikely that any rise in speed limits will be forthcoming.
It has been the norm for most cars to be able to travel quiet safely at speeds of upto 100 MPH for a sustained period of time , however this does not allow for the usual cause of accidents " human error " , this combined with poor maintenance and older vehicles " usualy owned by newer / younger drivers" with less experiance could ead to more accidents " if limits were increased.
When this is considered it should be noted that running at much slower speeds than optimum performance levels also increases the polution levels put out by vehicles per mile. So even with the current speed limits such things as speed " bumps " also known as sleeping policemen will be causing higher polution as cars decelerate and then increase speed. These combined with the single file traffic on some inner city " smaller " roads will be causing greater polution. These are all done in the hope of forcing the car owner of priate transport to public transport, which we all know is ineffective and well below standards that private transport can offer.
The price of fuel and its continued increase only goes to make everything else more expensive as there is nothing we use that does not require some form of transport.
I dont expect everyone to agree with this , however i also hope this has added to the thinking along these lines, and maybe will increase this debate .
