Tracking devices

Can anyone recommend a good tracking device? I'm not really sure what to look for (are there lots of different brands?) and how much I should be looking to pay for the device itself and fitting (I know there's a subscription to pay on top of about �350 'lifetime' subscription). I've done some googling and come across the RAC Trackstar Plus (the cost is �299, they say fitting is from �150) - is this a reputable type of device and is the price right?
