Strange noise in a VW Polo
69 Answers
I was driving home this afternoon when my car started making a strange noise. The noise only starts when I go faster than 35mph and it sounds like a cross between a faint siren and a mosquito in the car (if that makes sense - I am not very technically minded). Any ideas folks?

If I were you I would open the bonnet and start the engine, bring the revs up slowly to the approx amount of revs ( or more ) your car would be doing at 35 mph, listen for that noise while it is revving, if you can hear it then it is a moving part on the engine maybe a belt or a bearing on one of the moving components IE alternator bearing, air con compressor bearing or even the water pump.
If the noise only appears while the car is moving then it could be maybe a wheel related problem IE a wheel bearing, problem with a tyre or maybe one of the drive shafts.

Righto mrs overowl, next thing to do if I were you, drive the car ( and I use the term car very loosely lol ) with a passenger, have your windows down and get your passenger to see if they can hear if the noise is coming from their side of the car and if it is coming from the front or the rear while you are doing the same on your side of the car. hopefully one of you will detect what the cause of this noise is. Also you could jack up the car (lol) one corner at a time and spin the wheel as fast as possible and listen for any untoward noise to suggest a bad wheel bearing.
