At the risk of starting a motangelist fatwa, can anyone explain to me what is wrong with driving in the middle lane at at least 70mph on a motorway?

any more proselytes?
d9 has asked WHY something became part of the rules in the first place...why was the decision made to put it in there....?
because i can't see a definitive or particularly good reason for it...and actually i can see some benefits in the opposite ...so what was the reasoning of road officials when making up those rules...? just what was the logic behind choice made?
meerly saying 'thats the rules' and 'safety' doesnt really work.
nor does citing that driver habit would make it dangerous, because it wouldnt be a habit if it had never been a rule in the first place.

we all know the rules and d9 is not suggesting we all break them because he says so.
Yes, and a guide of good practice that is the basis of British driving behaviour will take precedence over a muppet who thinks he knows better and spouts forth to the bench about how he thinks the rules of the road should be.......

Thanks Joko, yes what is the reasoning?

no need to put yourself down eccles, so you have runout of coherant argument and decided to use the old name callinf route, well done, another one to me I think!
When I see someone needlessly in the middle I think

He/she is not concentrating
He/she is petrified of the motorway.

Basically I think they are numpties.
*middle lane*

whern I see womeone weaving up and down in and out of trucks causing chaos, I think, why not stay in the middle!
i agree mick that for many its fear... fear of weaving in and out of traffic too much.

but on 3 lane carriage ways, for some it might just be that they know they have to turn right soon and dont want to have to get across 2 lanes quickly to make the turn... or perhaps they know theres a turn but they dont know if its on the left or right...
d9f1c7 I didn't call you or anyone else a name. If, however, you read yourself into my scenario then so be it.
Turn right ?
Coming soon, d9 proud recipient of a Darwin award!
the problem boils down to speeding numpties who want to have a clearway to break the law and speed to their hearts content... who expect everyone else to accommodate that by weaving in and out of traffic to get out of their way - in order to save them themselves from weaving in and out of the right lane...

i am not talking about people who are going way below the speed limit here, as yes, they should move over to let traffic flow freely... but of people going the speed limit being intimidated by impatient speeders tailgating them

so the "muppet who thinks he know better" was not me? Who was it?
Question Author
read the above motley, I'm not the one.
i have never needed to drive very far in the middle lane... but if i felt it was dangerous to keep moving to the left i would stay in the middle ... and i most certainly would not respond kindly to an aggressive tailgater...
d9f1c7 - I suggest you pop down to have a chat with the local traffic police and ask them the same question.

When I see questions being asked like this, it reminds me to take extra care on the roads. I hope your question is being asked because your getting a bit bored, and in reality you do stick to the Highway Code. If not, then heaven help us!

We have to share the road with 38 million other road users, so there has to be rules and regulations that we ALL have to adhere to.
I was making a general comment about those who venture into court with an inflated view of their knowledge of how 'the traffic would flow better if everyone drives like me' rather than acknowledging that the Highway Code is the code by which all UK licence holders are taught to drive.
Do not arrogantly assume I have not read the above, I have no intention of being drawn into your infantile arguments as we both know you're out of order, and just tryiing to score points.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me the reasoning behind the mantra.
