running a red
a lapse of concentration and a subsequent error of judgement unfortunately caused me to run a red light. There was no grey box near it as you would expect if there was a camera connected, but there was a small grey box on top of it...didnt look like a camera. But could it have been one? How long before I get fined?

If it was a camera, or if your number was taken by somebody, the written notice must be sent to you within 14 days. It no longer has to be signed for, and if it gets lost in the post, you are deemed to have received it.
The small grey box could have been several things, probably a sensor to avoid the lights being red longer than required.
Traffic light cameras are always set about 10 yards before the light (so they can see you going through it). The box on top of the traffic light will have been a microwave detector used to either detect pedestrians waiting to cross (if the system incorporates pedestrian signals), or to detect traffic approaching the lights, so that the computer system knows exactly when it can override the sequence to allow traffic through (although it never seems to work like that!!)
