It all depends on what type of engine it has and the age. Old cars always smoke has it had a hard life?

This is common on older engines. The valve seals start to leak a bit and when the car is parked a bit of oil gets into the cylinders and causes smoke on starting.

It would be quite expensive to fix and shouldn't affect your MOT so I'd not worry too much about it.

Unless the car's new of course which would be quite a different matter.
