Brake-dust usually - most braking is provided by the front brakes, so more brake dust.
I agree with bhg. Even when you have disc brakes on the rear as well as the front the dust at the rear is minimal.
Yes - it's brake shoe dust - I think 70% of your braking is done by the front!
Maybe you drive into the dust & dirt front of the car first, leaving less for the back :-)

Check by reversing everywhere for a month or so, see which get dirtiest then.

i would Old_Geezer if i had any reversing gears
Because the front wheels turn. The dust from the wheels goes backwards as you travel forwards...so if you turn (even slightly) whilst braking the dust will pass through the wheel vents and deposit on the wheel surface.
Bazile & other members, just a tip if I may, I valet cars & have fdone for the last 30+years, the dust, as said is brake dust and can damage the Alloys if not cleaned on a regular basis, I always remove my road wheels at intervals to clean the rear of the wheels, this is where the dust builds up and "EATS" into the alloys, I am healthy enough to raise my car on Ramps to do this task, but to me it's worth it, to get the alloys re sprayed you are talking in the region of ( Depends where you are) £50 Per Wheel, If any on here decide to do this task, Think SAFETY before you start.
Good advice, TWR. It's worth mentioning that alloys can become porous after several years because of this and then you get the "slow punture" effect, requiring replacement wheels.
