Can anyone please tell me why a journey from Portsmouth today via A3 onto M25 to Romford that normally takes 2.5 -3 hours took 5.5 hours? There never at any point seemed a reason for this nose -to-tail foot by foot.a drivers nightmare.

It will be interesting to see what the effect will be in October when the toll booths are replaced by ANPR technology, although there will probably still be many accidents as vehicles are squeezed at fifty mph from eight lanes of traffic into four lane through the tunnels. Also how long will the tolls remain at the level currently set when a lot of vehicles won't be charged due to being foreign registered!

They will not be squeezed from eight lanes to four, twix. There are four lanes approaching the crossing (in each direction) and four across the river in each direction (two tunnels each with two lanes northbound and four on the bridge southbound).
I, too, am interested to see what difference in congestion the changes in October will bring. It can only improve matters but quite by how much is hard to forecast.
