MK1 Cortina 1500GT (on the log book as a 1200 deluxe) ,
the scary bit is nobody worried about MPG (they all seemed to do 20-25mpg regardless of engine size) and fuel was cheap as was insurance, road tax was the same regardless of vehicle...it was cheap motoring.
you bought a car because you liked it, not how much it cost to run.
Daihatsu Charade, 1 Litre, 3 cylinder. Bought tax-free for almost half the UK price whilst serving in W. Germany.
Coming home on leave was a 4 hour journey to Calais, cross, then Dover to North Wales. Whole journey completed on 2 tanks of petrol.
It was so good I kept it for 11 years!
A mini van , in green hsd belonged to a funeral director, it was cheaper in tax then because it was a van. I stuck large flower prints all over it , thought it was the bees knees. That was in 1971.
Well my Dad had a car waayyy back in the 50s,an Austin reg no PT0 460. My own car was a blue mini in the early 70s. It was 2nd ,3rd or 10th hand and it's reg was NWS 738G and cost £460. You could see the ground through the floor. I looked like one of The Flintstones in it.
