If we'd always had the current system and someone was to suggest replacing it with one where they sent out s piece of paper to stick to the windscreen, they'd be laughed at.
There really is no reason for tax discs any more. And reminders are still sent out: a lot of people tho seem to think that they might get away without paying if there's no disc on the windscreen, probably correctly which I believe has led to a reduction in the number of renewals. But equally there should be no excuse for the DVLA not redoubling their efforts to chase up their reminders

OG: "Setting up direct debits may not be rocket science but allowing others access to your weath is unwise": so you don't even have a bank account then OG? Biscuit Tin?
Mikey, they still send reminder, you can tax online using the ref no they send provided you are insured/MOTd.
I love the current system, I have a monthly DD for all my vehicles, no annual lump payment just when you don want it much better Idea.

// Must annoy those nosy traffic wardens.//
I said from day 1 that traffic wardens and 'enforcement agencies' would ultimately be issued with portable devices that use the same data base that the police do, to identify vehicles that are not taxed. All for our own benefit of course and serves us right.
