Strikes me watching 'crash for cash' examples on TV that if drivers kept a safe distance from the car in front most of these 'accidents' would never happen.

Or have two hands on the wheel...

Yes you see some appalling driving.

However, leaving a "safe distance" is not as easy as it sounds. As soon as you do (on a dual carriageway, anyway) some oik will almost certainly pull in from the offside lane and reduce your "safe distance" by half (or often less). So you drop back to a new "safe distance", and guess what? I'll leave you to it!

Gossh, so simples I wonder why no-one else thought of that?
Having someone following close behind me, especially at speed is one of the most frightening thing I see on our roads today. As NJ has said, if you try to slow down, some prat will just pull in front of you. I find a brief touch on my brakes soon warns the idiot behind !

Well Baldric, if anyone else thought of it they certainly don't put it into practice.

Oh, and why so sarcastic? Bad day at school?
Perhaps dashcams should become law.

bainbrig, today is Saturday, generally not a School Day.

Dashcams are good, but more traffic police might also help.
You are never going to get more police , so don't even bother to suggest it. Police numbers will continue to go down and more of what we have are being diverted to anti terrorist duties . Some might think that a bit more important than saving the insurance companies money!

My contribution above begins from 'NJ.' The rest is a copy of NJ's post !

A said, Dash Cams in case of an accident caused by inconsiderate drivers, the majority of HGV Pile ups are caused by these idiots & in some cases costing the life of the HGV driver.

Although it would be excellent if all drivers tried to drive to the standards laid down in 'Roadcraft' (police Class 1, Institute of Advanced Motorists, etc), all I am asking is that drivers do what they have to do on the basic driving test! Keep their distance, concentrate, two hands on the wheel.

Zero tolerance of deviation from the Highway Code might help right across the social board.
Bainbrig, you can dream but it will never happen with selfish drivers.
Some of the 'Crash for Cash' drivers reverse into the car behind when in a queue of traffic. They then accuse the innocent driver behind them of shunting into their car.
Question Author
It could happen, but only with a big increase in the number of traffic police.
