Protected No Claims Bonus
I recently had an incident when I was hit from behind by a Lorry it was on dual carriageway and I had to move off my lnside lane due to cars being parked in the near side.Insurance co said I was held responsible because I had encroached on to to outside lan.i had a protected no claims policy but when ichanged to another company I had to pay extra 250 on top of quoted years policy. What should my no claims policy have covered for or was it waste of money paying for it.

Your Protected No Claims only applies to your NO Claims Bonus ie, if you make a claim you will not lose your No Claims Bonus on renewal WITH THE SAME COMPANY. You changed to another company - the No Claims protection will not apply. It sounds like you had got a quote for renewal from a company other than the one you were insured with when you had the accident; when they heard about your accident they increased their quote by £250. Is this the case?
If you had an accident after getting the quote but before taking up their offer, it is reasonable to expect the company to increase the cost; there is normally a caveat in quotes to that effect. As I said, the No Claims Protection you paid for with your original company only applies if you continue to insure with them. Even if you had stayed with your original company your premium would have gone up as you had become a greater risk, although your no-claims discount would not have been reduced.
When you get a quote you are not asked what level of no-claims bonus you are on, you are asked how long since you had an accident/claim and that is what determines the premium you will be asked for.

Thanks,I still feel badly done by after the accident.I think the previous company just didnt bother to persue the incident .They didnt bother to look at both parties dash cam.I paid an excess on the repair which I had to pay and before agreeing to put the repair in the insurance hands I got a quote from an independant repairer,it was £450 the same as my excess and so I let the insurance agent to do the repair. Can you believe they charged the insurance company 8 times my quote.£3500.00.They got ripped off and left me with 5 yrs increased insurance costs. No wonder I feel let down.
Even if you don't make a claim you are obliged to tell your insurance company that you've been involved in an accident - any accident, even if it wasn't your fault. Failing to do that can render your policy invalid and you could find that a later claim is refused, possibly leaving you with a very large bill.
