Driving on the left

Why does only half of the world drive on the left (correct !) side of the road. When was the decision made and why ? And why didn't the Yanks stick with us ?

When this question arose some time ago, mention was made of the above site. It advises drivers to practice driving on the correct side of the road in their own countries for a few weeks before their visit to the UK. At least the danger will be in somebody else's country.

China changed to right-side driving around 1950. It was at this point that the right-side driving population of the world became larger. Sweden was the last country to change, around 40 years ago, despite over 80% of the population voting against.
