found the answer on www.direct.guv.uk

"If the vehicle is presented for test within the calendar month prior to the date that the MOT is due, the test certificate will run from the date of the test to one year after the expiry date of the current certificate for example if the current certificate was due to expire on 1 April 2003, and the vehicle was presented on or after 2 March 2003, the certificate would run from the test date until 1 April 2004.

To have this extension, the vehicle owner should present their old certificate to the test station to verify that the extra time is applicable. The tester would then write the serial number of the old certificate in the appropriate section of the new certificate.

The same rule would also apply if the vehicle was taken in within a calendar month of its first MOT. In this case, the vehicle owner would need to present their registration document and the serial number from this document will be entered in the 'last certificate serial number' box on the MOT.

If the vehicle is tested earlier than one month before it's due date, it will only run for twelve months."

Quick answer..........

If you take your old mot certificate with you and give it to the tester the new one will run from the date the old one runs out, you can do this up to 1 month in advance.

I always get mine done early in case it fails then you can get it repaired before it runs out!

as has been said, so long as you show your old certificate when your car's being mot'd you can get up to a month extra, ie mot runs out on 10th april 06 and you mot car on 10th march 06 then new mot cert. says exp. 1th april 07. If you wait till 10th april to get your car mot'd it'll say 9th april 07!!!!, always confused me that one.

Toureman: be careful m8, if your car fails the mot and the tester use's the 'unsafe for road use box' and you continue to use the car for the time till the old mot runs out you could be in deep trouble if caught.

Oh forgot to say sl1ckst3r, if you leave it untill you get back from your hol's, remember to book it into a mot station 1st, and make sure they get your details, otherwise if pulled over you will be in serious trouble!!!!
