What is the best car 1000 can buy? The qualities I'm looking for are (in no particular order): reliability, cheap to tax and insure, something a 21 year old won't be embarrassed to drive, not too big (ie hatchback). Am I asking too much for 1000? Have had a quick look online but would appreciate other peoples opinions and experiences with cars of this price.

ive got a m reg 1.4 golf for sale 50k on the clock for less than a grand
sounds like he has just answered your question on reliability, tax and not embarrasing and price in his car, prob have to get a quote for insurance cos i aint got a clue. all i know is golf r well reliable and its barely run in on that milage
I would go for a Peugeot 306 turbo diesel (sedan is cheaper, but rare). Great car, and 1000 could get you a half decent P or R reg. If you want a petrol and something a bit newer then I would have to go for a Daeoo - not great, but you will get something a lot newer than most other cars for that price. Plus, its really a vauxhall (engine, box and a lot of the interior), so its economical and reliable.

Hope this helps.
PS, the Daeoo Espero CDXI gets you the Ecotec 2.0 16v engine
Daewoo suck. trust me.
Not the best car, I would agree, but you are gaining the reliability and technology of Vauxhall for a fraction of the price.
erimus1, now you put it like it makes perfect sense.
