I drive a Suzuki and my breaks have begun squeeking loudly whenever I break. I'm a bit of novice when it comes to cars, does this mean the breakpads need to be replaced? If so what is this likely to cost annd whats the best place to get them done?

At least here in the U.S., but standard on foreign cars here, when the brake pads need replacing because of wear, the noise one hears is a distinctive "chirp", rather than a squeak. I've found that dust and other contaminants can cause squeaking. My Ford F-150 pickup here on the ranch has squeaking brakes after a rain or other travel through water. Not a whole lot that can be done about it, but you should have them looked at to confirm the problem...I would ask if it's the front or back brakes because, being unfamiliar with the Suzuki, it may not have disc brakes on all four wheels and the back wheels could be equipped with drum type brakes, which do tend to squeak even more than disc brakes, in my opinion...

Always get any brake problems of queries checked out as soon as possible. There is no point in taking unecessary risks with something as important as brakes

The squeaking sound you are hearing is simply the brake pads vibrating when you brake.

The usual way to cure it is to apply a small amount of grease, (copa slip) to the back of each pad taking care to not get any grease on the front friction material side of the pad.

If you cannot do this a garage would not charge much and they could also check over your braking system at the same time.

If you are sure your brakes are good and no one is driving behind you try slamming on a few times then brake normally. It works for me and the answer above (vibrating) probably explains why on gentle braking.
You need new brake pads if they are not changed in time you will also need new roters. As long as you do it before the pads are comepletely gone it shouldn't cost much. As for where only go to a mechanic who comes highly recommended so ask friends and neighbors and especially any car buffs you might know
