Air con not working at all, are there any common faults?

i used to have an a4 which had a similar problem i was informed by a garage that i had a gas leak somewhere under the dash and was going to be costly to repair (which i never had done)
however once regassed at a cost of �20 the aircon worked for a good 12 months before going off again
